Virginia's Historical Markers

An excellent article on Virginia's ubiquitous metallic, small print signs from Charlotteville's The Hook. I have linked to (or borrowed) 2 or three of Jason Watson's marker photos from his site. Thanks to the great SW Virginia Law Blog for finding the article for me.

Lost Virginia

While googling for the street address of the Augusta County Courthouse I stumbled across this page, which is a part of this site, a promo for a 2001 museum exhibition called "Lost Virginia: Vanished Architecture of the Old Dominion." The High Victorian Gothic Roanoke Post office (demolished 1933) is there, as is the first Homestead (burned 1901).

Harvard v. U.Va.1947

This is an article I stumbled across about the first time a black college football player played in a game in the South. The game took place at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville on October 11, 1947. Note the prominence of Rebel flags among the Virginia fans. Virginia ended up being one of the two last ACC teams (along with South Carolina) to integrate.
